The Dutch-Canadian Remembrance Committee of the Netherlands Association “Je Maintiendrai” Society has reintroduced several previous projects coordinated by the Dutch Liberation 2020 Canadian Society.
One of these programs is to host a Memorial Commemoration Service on May 4, 2024, at Mountain View Cemetery. This service is dedicated to commemorating the fallen who fought to liberate the Netherlands in 1945. With the support of the Vancouver Police Department, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, the 15th Field Artillery Regiment RCA, the 39 Service Battalion, the “6” Engineer Squadron, the Dutch Consulate of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Vancouver, and all Dutch community organizations—including the Dutch Business Club, De Esdoorn Dutch Language and Culture School, the Dutch Cultural Association of BC—the Dutch-Canadian Remembrance Committee hosted a memorial commemoration service in honor of the 79th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands by Canadians.
On May 5, 2024, in recognition of the fifth anniversary of Dutch Heritage Day in British Columbia—a national day approved by the Parliament of Canada on April 11, 2019—the Committee’s focus was to thank veterans and seniors in BC for their service to the community and to honor the Canadian veterans and seniors residing in care homes or retirement homes. The Committee distributed 5400 tulip bouquets to 36 care homes throughout British Columbia.
The hope and expectation are that the Dutch-Canadian Remembrance Committee will make these events an annual tradition.
